Buddha the Enlightened One and Jesus, Son of God have successfully brought the 20th century to a close, and after a few millennia of guiding humanity to salvation, these two sacred ones are in need of some rest and relaxation。 They decide to share an apartment on Earth in Tokyo, but living among mortals in the 21st century is no cakewalk for the saintly duo。。。 They may find it difficult to navigate modern Japanese living, but Jesus' carefree attitude along with Buddha's domestic qualities and maybe a few divine interventions will surely allow them to enjoy their new lives with peace and love。

Unless you have a population of students who would be familiar with all three religions, this might be an easy one to skip purchasing。If you do happen to have that student population who would find this enjoyable, there was nothing inappropriate or risqué about the first volume。 The two occasionally drink beer, but that is really the only inclusion of drugs or alcohol thus far。Sara's Rating: 4/10Suitability Level: Grades 9-12 。。。more

Less satire and more weird religious nerd humor- not mad at that。 Also, for two divine figures they get into alot of trouble。 Buddha is very obviously the adult in this relationship。 Jesus had to have a GPS installed in his crown of throns to make sure he didn't get lost。 Less satire and more weird religious nerd humor- not mad at that。 Also, for two divine figures they get into alot of trouble。 Buddha is very obviously the adult in this relationship。 Jesus had to have a GPS installed in his crown of throns to make sure he didn't get lost。 。。。more

Wacky roommate fun。 I liked it。 Art is light and interesting。 Two joke missteps: a "don't want to get fat" moment, and a few instances of toxic gender essentialism。 Wacky roommate fun。 I liked it。 Art is light and interesting。 Two joke missteps: a "don't want to get fat" moment, and a few instances of toxic gender essentialism。 。。。more

I wish I could say I took my time reading Saint Young Men to savor it, but, frankly, it is a bit boring。 I could only take it in small doses。 The humor is flat and gets repeated over and over each chapter。 The art is decent if inconsistent。 This definitely should have been a one-shot, but instead spawned a series。 It’s an entertaining idea, but for me, it just floundered。

Jesus and Budda decide take a gap year and get an apartment together。。。sounds like the beginning of a joke。 Instead it's a cute comic about two spiritual beings taking some time to experience life in modern day Japan。 Jesus and Budda decide take a gap year and get an apartment together。。。sounds like the beginning of a joke。 Instead it's a cute comic about two spiritual beings taking some time to experience life in modern day Japan。 。。。more

Although it is necessary to read the translation notes to understand some puns, the manga is still brilliantly funny。 I had some good loughs while reading it。

I think I actually liked the anime better for this one, but I am gonna continue on with the series。 I still liked it but not as much as I remember loving the anime series。

This was different from what I expected。 It was a lot less satire and a lot more world religion nerd humor。 Except a lot of the jokes are cultural and don't translate great for the average reader。 I really enjoyed the characterizations of Buddha and Jesus though, and the novelty of their odd couple chemistry never wore off。 I don't think I'm going to read any more of this one, just because it was fairly slow going for me, wordy with a lot of editorial notes。 The warm humor of the duo's intimate This was different from what I expected。 It was a lot less satire and a lot more world religion nerd humor。 Except a lot of the jokes are cultural and don't translate great for the average reader。 I really enjoyed the characterizations of Buddha and Jesus though, and the novelty of their odd couple chemistry never wore off。 I don't think I'm going to read any more of this one, just because it was fairly slow going for me, wordy with a lot of editorial notes。 The warm humor of the duo's intimate living situation always made me smile though。 。。。more

From a description, I'd been expecting something more satirical, but I was pleased to find this rather gentle and kind。 Jesus and Buddha, incarnated for the purpose at an apparent age of about 24, take a year's, so to speak, sabbatical in the material world as somewhat collegial roommates and friends in a Tokyo apartment。 Small-scale adventures in modern (as of 2008, when it was originally written) Japanese culture ensue。 (This English translation is dated 2019。)With its focus on friendship and From a description, I'd been expecting something more satirical, but I was pleased to find this rather gentle and kind。 Jesus and Buddha, incarnated for the purpose at an apparent age of about 24, take a year's, so to speak, sabbatical in the material world as somewhat collegial roommates and friends in a Tokyo apartment。 Small-scale adventures in modern (as of 2008, when it was originally written) Japanese culture ensue。 (This English translation is dated 2019。)With its focus on friendship and scenes of daily life, it reminded me of parts of the equally odd anime Namuamidabutsu! - Utena -, but with a much smaller cast and without the assorted fight scenes with earthly-vice-monsters。 (Also not as bishonen。 I don't think you could get more bishonen than Namuamidabutsu! - Utena -。)Ta, L。 。。。more

Jesus and Buddha are on vacation living in a small apartment in Tokyo。What a great manga! The humor is gentle but sly and both Jesus and Buddha seem relatable (which is pretty amazing in itself!)Jesus writes a blog where he watches "every series on every channel in every time slot and post my reviews on the same day!" Buddha occasionally glows, which ends up being a tell for card games。 Jesus' stigmata bleed when he becomes upset (which causes trouble in a public pool)。 I enjoyed the translation Jesus and Buddha are on vacation living in a small apartment in Tokyo。What a great manga! Okay, this was fun! I enjoyed reading about Jesus and Buddha's vacation here on Earth。 They are essentially taking a gap year and renting out an apartment in Tokyo, Japan and just enjoying some down time and seeing how much the world has changed since they were last here in their mortal coil。 Okay, this was fun! This book made me laugh the whole time I had it。 I was a little wary about reading it simply because I don't like reading anything with religious tones in it。 HOWEVER, every hint towards the Christian and Buddhist faiths (the stories, the people, etc) were taken in jest or helped portray Jesus and Buddha as normal people。 Obviously they are both saints who have descended from heaven to spend some time on earth again, but they are living their lives as if they weren't saints。 They just want to be This book made me laugh the whole time I had it。 I was a little wary about reading it simply because I don't like reading anything with religious tones in it。 HOWEVER, every hint towards the Christian and Buddhist faiths (the stories, the people, etc) were taken in jest or helped portray Jesus and Buddha as normal people。 Obviously they are both saints who have descended from heaven to spend some time on earth again, but they are living their lives as if they weren't saints。 They just want to be normal guys for a bit- well, as normal as possible for people catered to by animals and can turn to water to wine just by being too happy。 If i passed these men on the street today, I don't know if i would have looked twice unless they were having what i am dubbing a 'saint episode'。 This feeling is exactly what i think the author was aiming for。Saint Young Men is a great read for anyone。 Did I mention that all of the references are also explained after each chapter?! Yeah。 Even if you miss some of them, Nakamura points them out so you can go back and read the chapter again or continue on with a bit more insight into Christianity and Buddhism。 。。。more

This was the first manga book that I read completely。 The base of the story is; what would two world gods, Buddha and Jesus do if they took a year off and lived on earth as 20+yr men? Jesus is portrayed as a little more easy going and he has a blog。 Buddha has a money fixation。 The story did entertain me and I am hoping the teens find the books entertaining also。 Some adults said this series was blaspheme, but I just looked at the story as two super "clean" young men doing life lessons about tak This was the first manga book that I read completely。 The base of the story is; what would two world gods, Buddha and Jesus do if they took a year off and lived on earth as 20+yr men? 2。5 rounded up, it just wasn't for me。It's a fun, slice-of-life style manga about Jesus and Buddha kicking it back and being roommates, but it doesn't really have any connective tissue。 It's more like little vignettes that play on puns or religious history to make its point, which is fair, but I was looking for more of a story。 2。5 rounded up, it just wasn't for me。It's a fun, slice-of-life style manga about Jesus and Buddha kicking it back and being roommates, but it doesn't really have any connective tissue。 It's more like little vignettes that play on puns or religious history to make its point, which is fair, but I was looking for more of a story。 。。。more

The quirky and gag-filled humor of SAINT YOUNG MEN #1 definitely isn't for everyone, but the book's knack for insisting readers stretch their minds in terms of how they contextualize and interpret cultural humor is worthy of discussion。The irreverence of a life devoid of self-reflection and therefore self-criticism is no life worth living。 Religion is no exception。 Buddha is stingy, is concerned about body image, and has a very tender (weak) disposition。 Jesus is dangerously carefree and generally dim, is a ramen food blogger, and has a tendency to misread public situations that put him and his best buddy in danger without realizing it。 They're quite the pair。SAINT YOUNG MEN #1 is an awkward slice-of-life manga about two twentysomething men doing their best to meander through contemporary Japan while avoiding responsibility and the dreaded unceremonial "return home" because they screwed up their first vacation in 2100 years。 This manga is precisely as weird as it sounds。The best humor comes from the guys' innocent miscalculation of their own good-natured behaviors。 For example, when Jesus acknowledges to a stern-faced yakuza that he "broke out" of jail in just three days, the young men accidentally earn the favor of the criminal underworld。 Whoops。 Or when Jesus spends too much time on a trampoline at a park with neighborhood kids。 The fun begins innocently enough until Buddha realizes that if Jesus jumps too high then the angels will think he's trying to ascend back into heaven and snatch him up。 Whoops。 Things get worse when a woman standing nearby has no idea for what's going on (Ascend into heaven? "Just how sickly is this child?")。 Or when Buddha is terrified about riding a rollercoaster for the first time。 Immediately prior to hitting the first drop, he chants a sutra such that he reaches enlightenment for a second time so as to avoid being scared witless。All in all, they're a couple of dorks。 Jesus reads mystery novels by starting at the end。 Buddha is obsessed about getting a deluxe rice cooker。 Jesus loves to cosplay as Johnny Depp。 Buddha likes pop music。 Jesus writes stand-up comedy。 Buddha has bad luck with arcade games。Readers will get the most out of SAINT YOUNG MEN #1 by not thinking too hard。 For example, when Buddha is trying his utmost to throw a surprise birthday party for Jesus, he tries to distract his buddy by redirecting any public mention of Christmas around his airheaded roommate。 And so when a street preacher approaches the two, Buddha cuts off the man of cloth by declaring that yes (pun: "Yah Way!") he believes in Jesus and professes absolute confidence in his friend (who is standing next to him)。 The problem? Buddha grabs Jesus's hands in a manner not entirely unromantic (Jesus: "I don't think this is really the best place to talk about this。")。SAINT YOUNG MEN #1 is a long and rather purposeless journey into the oddities of modern religion and how it so obviously doesn't fit in with modern times。 Well, at least they're trying。 。。。more
